Shane Koyczan makes spoken-word poetry and music. His poem “To This Day” is a powerful story of bullying and survival, illustrated by animators from around the world.

The presentation was at the Mental Health Foundation of Australia HQ in Prahran. (They are starting their 2013 seminar series - so check it out if you’re interested!!)

Many of you out there are no doubt aware that the growing epidemic of high sugar, high fat diets that exist in Australia is contributing to poor health outcomes. Most are aware that we feel better on a healthy diet, and kids go nuts when fed sugar! We probably treat it a bit lightly, acutally, because Associate Professor Jacka is out spreading the message that it’s much more serious than that.

The research presented is relatively new - about three and a half years old. This research is not only conducted here in Australia, but in countries around the world. It links the high sugar, high fat, processed foods, lacking in nutrients with onset of depression and anxiety. A new term that I really liked - “malnubesity”. Overweight due to the energy dense diet, but still malnourished!!

If you ever get a chance to hear Associate Prof Jacka speak - do go along!

A.Prof Jacka is about to start a new trial. So if you know someone, ore you’re interested in being part of it, see the contact details below. The trial is for people 18 years or more who suffer from depression (self-diagnosed or diagnosed) who would like to be part of a trial to see how changing their diet affects their mental health. Participants will get assistance from a dietician plus social support. You can be on medication or not. If you’re interested, contact

diet@barwonhealth.org.au or phone 8415 0944

Trial is running in Melbourne (St Vincents) and Geelong.

Parenting Teens Parents Evening

Just a reminder that the info session facilitated by Drummond Street Services is happening in a week’s time.
The theme is developing a strong and supportive relationship and helping guide your teenager in the right direction. Murdoch Childrens Research Institute at The Royal Children’s Hospital is running a randomised clinical trial of an online weight management program for overweight adolescents. Participation involves completing height, weight, blood pressure and waist circumference measurements and an online questionnaire at baseline, 3, 6 and 12 months. Parents are also invited to participate. Every 3 months there will be a draw for a $100 gift voucher for those participants who have kept their appointments. The results will demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of using the personalised, targeted Staying Fit program for addressing weight-related behaviours during adolescence. Recruitment has commenced and we are looking for 550 overweight young people aged 12- 17 living in metropolitan Melbourne.

This evening will provide an opportunity to have your questions answered on issues relating to child and adolescent anxiety and depression

Sally-Anne McCormack (Psychologist & Author) and Nicky Johnston (Author) are both mothers who have experience in dealing with child and/or adolescent mental health issues. They will be available to answer any questions you have about:

● Anxiety ● Panic attacks ● Depression ● Treatment options

Please come equipped with specific questions as this session is an informal question and answer format.

Both Sally-Anne and Nicky welcome every question asked. Although they may not have all the answers, they will answer to the best of their ability. It might be a good idea to write down your questions beforehand – you know what it is like when you forget, especially if you are anxious!
